Forget buying software: You can now rent Microsoft Office

13 hrs.

Considering that we can have music, movies, TV shows, Photoshop???even underwear???via some sort of monthly or yearly subscription, it's about time we can finally rent Microsoft Office 365, too.

In exchange for $100 per?year (or $10 per?month), you'll be able to install Office 2013 on up to five PCs, Macs or Windows tablets. You'll have?access to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook, Publisher and Access. Additionally, you'll get an extra?20GB of cloud storage through SkyDrive (on top of the 7GB you already get for free) along with 60 minutes of Skype world calling per month.?

You can still buy Office 2013 the old-school way, though don't expect to see any physical media in the software box; you'll just buy a product code and be sent online to download the actual software. The Home & Student version of that is $140 and is limited to one device (and just Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote); Home & Business is $220 (which includes Outlook as well), and Pro ? with all of the same?apps offered in the subscription ??is $400.

Besides being able to install on up to five devices, there are other benefits to the subscription plan:?Free upgrades to the latest versions of the Office software are included, so you can buy in at any time without worrying about missing the next version. Better still, since the subscription?license covers different types of devices, you don't have to buy a bunch of different versions.?(Besides Mac support, Microsoft has said in the past that this Office 365?license would even?provide you with not-yet-released editions, including a possible iPad version.)

If you have a family with lots going on, it is likely to be a money saver, even when you factor in the deals you get from home/student pricing.?

If you are simply?a power user with a lot of different devices, you'll be able to sync Office 365?documents between them with ease. (And you'll, of course, also be able to share documents quickly, thanks to SkyDrive.)?It doesn't stop with the documents though: Your settings and preferences sync as well. This means that no matter where you sign into Office 365, you'll have the same experience. This is, once again, a great benefit for those who split their time between one too many devices.

Pricing and cloud support aside, the latest Office itself isn't a radical redesign. Everything feels familiar, with some small tweaks. It appears that Microsoft is attempting to reduce the bloat we occasionally experience when it comes to its software suite. Does it succeed? Well, we'll have to use the software for a bit longer to make a solid judgment call in regards to that.

While?the?latest version of the software isn't?lacking anything?from?the?traditional?desktop?view???in fact, our initial impression is that it might be the best version of Office we've used so far???we're still waiting for a finger-friendly tablet version of the?legendary?suite.?Though?it?would?be?a?huge?success?given?the?popularity?of?iPads?and?other?tablets,?Microsoft?isn't?going?to?rush?that?out?in?haste,?because?the?company's?developers?say?they?want?to?get?it?right.

You can snag a free one-month trial of Office 365 through Office.com and we suggest taking advantage of this deal. Odds are that you'll find it feeling comfortable and familiar ? and a little lighter on the checkbook as well.

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

ZTE's 5.7-inch, 8mm-thick Grand Memo teased ahead of MWC launch, we go hands-on

ZTE's 57inch, 8mmthick Grand Memo teased ahead of MWC, we go handson

Huawei may have its 6.1-inch Ascend Mate for the convenience of hiding your face, but ZTE's also prepping its very own tabletphone to go head to head with its main rival. Dubbed the Grand Memo (V9815), this 5.7-inch 720p device made a surprise appearance at a ZTE event in Hong Kong today, and we got to snap some photos of it. The device looks identical to the P945 leaked earlier this month but packs some slightly different specs: 1.7GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro (same as the more premium Grand S), 13-megapixel camera, 8mm-thick body and Android 4.1.2.

While the specs aren't too shabby, our colleague Stone Ip said the choice of finish on the body didn't feel as nice as the Grand S', and the silver bezel made the Grand Memo look worse, but in ZTE's defense it was a prototype and the design may improve in the retail version. On a more positive note, the new phone does include a microSD slot despite its slimness, and it comes with a "one-hand" T9 keyboard that can stick to either side of the screen for better single-handed typing, just too bad we were asked not to take a video of the device at the time. That said, the Grand Memo will be officially unveiled at MWC next month, so stay tuned for more.

Blanking Panel Program Improves Energy Efficiency for QTS Customers

Overland Park, Kan. (PRWEB) January 30, 2013

QTS (Quality Technology Services) today announced that it has purchased more than 60,000 tool-less, blanking panels that it will install at no charge for all of its customers. The installation follows a successful pilot program in the company?s Miami data center.

Blanking panels ensure efficient air circulation by attaching to server racks and guiding air directly to infrastructures in need of cooling. The panels improve energy efficiency but are not always used by multi-tenant data center customers in a shared resource environment due to the high cost. By providing panels and installation at no charge to its customers, QTS ensures its facilities are held to green energy standards while improving temperature control.

?We?re pleased with the QTS blanking panel program, which not only saves energy in the data center, but has been good for our infrastructure,? said Brad Koester, IT director, Information Technology Infrastructure & Governance ? Republic Metals Corporation, QTS customer. ?The on-board sensors in our servers and storage indicate that the temperatures are more consistent with the panels.?

?The blanking panel initiative has enhanced our running dialogue on sustainability with our customers,? said Sukrit Sehgal, director of sustainability ? QTS. ?We?re looking forward to matching the success of the program in Miami across our entire customer base in our data centers nationwide.?

QTS worked closely with its vendor to develop a tool-less, recyclable steel blanking panel. ?We knew some of our customers would prefer to self-install the blanking panels in their environments,? said Brian Johnston, chief technology officer ? QTS. ?In working with our vendor, we were able to develop a blanking panel that was not only environmentally friendly, but also fast and easy to install.?

The addition of blanking panels in QTS data centers nationwide continues the company?s ongoing efforts to improve energy efficiency. In 2012 QTS announced LEED Gold certification of Data Center 1 at its Richmond Data Center and Phase II at the company?s Atlanta Metro facility. Since 2011, QTS has recycled more than six million pounds of materials from its data centers, including copper, aluminum, steel, plastic and concrete, and continues its $10 million multi-year energy efficiency investment.

Feisty GOP congresswoman challenges Obama to skeet shooting contest

Rep. Marsha Blackburn, a Republican representing Tennessee, appeared to question the claim voiced by President Barack Obama that he is an avid skeet shooter. Said Blackburn on January 28 on CNN?s OutFront with Erin Burnett, "I think he should invite me to Camp David, and I'll go skeet shooting with him and I bet I'll beat him." This came after The New Republic published an interview with Obama as he is enlisting public support for a legislative package of gun controls. The chief executive expressed deep? respect for American sportsmen and hunters and, when asked if he had ever discharged a firearm, responded "Up at Camp David, we do skeet shooting all the time.? Besides, said Obama, ?And I have a profound respect for the traditions of hunting that trace back in this country for generations. ? Obama was quick to point out, however, that he is not passing on his shooting past-time on to his daughters.

"And I think those who dismiss that out of hand make a big mistake," added Obama. Obama also noted that gun ownership in rural America is a "very different" phenomenon that that in urban areas, such as Chicago, where it is frequently linked to violent crime. "If you grew up and your dad gave you a hunting rifle when you were 10, and you went out and spent the day with him and your uncles, and that became part of your family's traditions, you can see why you'd be pretty protective of that," Obama told The New Republic.

Rep. Blackburn expressed scepticism , while appearing to suggest that Obama?s claim to wielding firearms is a political ploy. "If he is a skeet shooter, why have we not heard of this? Why have we not seen photos? Why hasn't he referenced this at any point in time as we have had this gun debate that is ongoing,? Blackburn asked. ?You would have thought it would have been a point of reference.? Rep. Blackburn is a native of Laurel, Mississippi, and is a former image consultant.

At a January 28 White House press conference, White House press secretary Jay Carney said he is not "sure how often" Obama shoots skeet. Carney replied, when asked why the public has not seen any pictures of Obama shooting, "Because when he goes to Camp David, he goes to spend time with his family and friends and relax, not to produce photographs." He added, "There may be [a photo], but I haven't seen it."

President Obama is calling on Congress to pass new restrictions on gun ownership. Besides universal background checks, Obama wants bans on so-called ?assault weapons? and high-capacity ammunition magazines. In the wake of the Sandy Hook tragedy, Obama signed a number of executive actions aimed at tightening current gun laws. Vice-President Joseph Biden has drawn up tighter firearms regulations after several weeks of study. Efforts by Obama and gun-control advocates, such as Sen. Diane Feinstein, have faced strong opposition from Republicans and some Democrats, especially in the West and South. The various groups advocating gun-rights, such as the National Rifle Association, are also mounting a campaign against new restrictions.

In his New Republic interview, Obama also expressed an avuncular concern about player safety in American football games. This came just a week before the Super Bowl, when millions will be glued to television sets to watch NFL mayhem on the field. Several? professional football players have in recent years developed brain damage, which has been linked to the frequent impacts on their skulls despite wearing helmets. Concern is growing over potential injuries to young people, especially high school boys, who engage in the rough and tumble sport so beloved by Americans. "I'm a big football fan, but I have to tell you if I had a son, I'd have to think long and hard before I let him play football," said Obama.

Scientists learn more about how inhibitory brain cells get excited

Jan. 30, 2013 ? Scientists have found an early step in how the brain's inhibitory cells get excited. A natural balance of excitement and inhibition keeps the brain from firing electrical impulses randomly and excessively, resulting in problems such as schizophrenia and seizures. However excitement is required to put on the brakes.

"When the inhibitory neuron is excited, its job is to suppress whatever activity it touches," said Dr. Lin Mei, Director of the Institute of Molecular Medicine and Genetics at the Medical College of Georgia at Georgia Regents University and corresponding author of the study in Nature Neuroscience.

Mei and his colleagues found that the protein erbin, crucial to brain development, is critical to the excitement.

It was known that a protein on the cell surface called TARP gamma-2, also known as stargazing, interacts with a brain cell receptor called AMPA, ensuring the receptor finds the cells surface. It is here that the receptor can be activated by the neurotransmitter glutamate. AMPA receptor activation is essential to activation of the NMDA receptor, which enables cells to communicate, ultimately enabling learning and memory, Mei said. How TARP gamma-2 was controlled, was an unknown.

Inside the nucleus of inhibitory cells in areas of the brain that control learning and memory, the researchers found erbin interacts with TARP gamma-2, enabling it to survive. "If you do not have this mechanism, your stargazing becomes very unstable and your AMPA receptor cannot be on the surface so this neuron is inactive," Mei said. They also found that erbin is only in these inhibitory neurons, called interneurons. They're already working on what they believe to be the counterpart for excitatory cells, which account for about 80 percent of brain cells.

"Interneurons basically control firing," releasing GABA, a major inhibitory neurotransmitter, Mei said. They tone down or synchronize the activity of pyramidal cells, pyramid-shaped neurons that get both excitatory and inhibitory input then make the call on what action to take.

When scientists ablated the erbin gene in mice or kept erbin from interacting with TARP gamma-2, a protein that helps anchor the AMPA receptor on the cell surface, TARP gamma-2 couldn't do its job. The result was less receptors on the cell surface and mice that were hyperactive with impaired learning and memory.

Cell activity hinges on receptor activity and receptors must be anchored on the cell surface to work. Ensuring AMPA receptors are strategically placed is a lifelong task since the busy receptors wear out and each brain cell has tons of them, Mei said.

He and his colleagues reported in the journal, Neuron, in 2007, two genes -- neuregulin-1 and its receptor ErbB4 -- that help maintain a healthy balance of excitement and inhibition by releasing GABA at the sight of inhibitory synapses, the communication paths between neurons. Years before, they showed the genes were also at excitatory synapses, where they also could quash activation. Both genes are involved in human development and implicated in schizophrenia and cancer.
