When Massachusetts Institute of Technology athletic director Julie Soriero offered Holly Glynn the head women?s lacrosse coaching position two weeks ago, she gave the former Waltham High School and Columbia University star 24 hours to make a decision.
Soriero got her answer in less than 24 seconds.
?There was nothing to think about. I had taken a year and a half off after graduation to go into the business world, and realized how much I had missed lacrosse,?? said Glynn, her team?s career scoring leader in high school and in college. ?I felt it would be a dream come true to become a head coach at the college level. So I said ?yes? almost immediately.??
Soriero said Glynn?s high level of play as a collegian, her dedication to the sport, and her passion for coaching were clearly evident to the search committee, which included two MIT varsity players.
?I believe our student-athletes will respond to her enthusiasm and leadership,?? said Soriero.
Glynn had 319 points (230 goals, 89 assists) for the girls? lacrosse team Waltham High, where she also was an inaugural member of the girls? ice hockey team as a sophomore and set the program?s career scoring record.
At Columbia, Glynn?s 187 career points included improvements each year as a goal scorer: 22 as a freshman, 23 as a sophomore, 44 as a junior and 45 her senior season (a program single-season record).
A team captain and an All-Region and All-Ivy League selection as a member of the class of 2009 at Columbia, Glynn last January began a six-month stint as coach of three girls? lacrosse teams at the Sedbergh School in England through a program sponsored by the English Lacrosse Association.
Glynn, 24, who first played lacrosse as an eighth-grader, was introducing the sport to most of her British players as well as her assistant coach.
This fall, she served as an assistant coach for the women?s lacrosse team at Mount Ida College in Newton.
?I felt pretty good about my chances to be offered the job at MIT,?? said Glynn, who will continue to work full time in marketing at a Needham technology firm. ?I had come from a school, like MIT, that highly values excellence in academics and athletics, and even though I was two years out of college, I felt that was one of my strengths - relating to the MIT players.?? She is already talking with team members and with prospective players, as well as getting acquainted with her coaching staff.
?It?s exciting to be a role model,?? said Glynn, whose resume also includes coaching at the NoCar Lacrosse Camp in Davidson, N.C., and the Uptown Lacrosse Camp in New York City. ?I was successful when I was in their shoes, and hopefully my players can emulate that.??
Loiseau to play in Shrine Game
Merrimack College senior captain Shawn Loiseau of Shrewsbury has been selected for the annual East-West Shrine Game, set for Jan. 21 in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Loiseau, named the Northeast-10 Conference Defensive Player of the Year and a first-team NE-10 pick at linebacker, ranks third in conference history with 382 tackles, including 121 last fall season for the Warriors, who were 6-4.
His best game was against Assumption, when he recorded a career-high 22 tackles.
A three-time first-team All-Conference selection, the 6-foot-2, 238-pound Loiseau is the first Merrimack player to earn the conference?s Defensive Player of the Year honor twice. He is also a three-time All-Region selection, and ranked second nationally in tackles per game the last two years.
?This is a great honor for Shawn,?? said Merrimack head coach John Perry. ?He has put in the work on and off the field to get to this point, and I know he will do whatever it takes to make it at the next level.??
Long is once again a Bentley captain
Bentley University senior Steve Long, a graduate of Newton North High, will be returning as a captain of the men?s track and field team this spring.
Head coach Kevin Curtin said his predecessor at Bentley, Ed Lyons, ?told me that he named Steve captain because he had the best work ethic on the team.
?I?ve seen nothing over the course of the past year to indicate otherwise about Steve,?? Curtin said. ?The fact that he?s an All-East shot putter and leads off our 4x100 relay outdoors is testament to that.??
Long holds the program?s indoor record in the 35-pound weight throw, and ranks third in the shot put (both indoors and out) and the discus. He finished third in the shot at last year?s NE-10 indoor championships.
In high school, Long was a team captain his senior year and a Bay State Conference All-Star.
Area soccer players earn All-N.E. honors
The All-New England Division 3 men?s soccer first-team rosters for the fall season feature a wealth of local players.
The South side includes Babson College senior goalkeeper Peter Crowley of Lexington, Eastern Connecticut State senior defender Aaron Smiles of Bedford, Roger Williams junior defender Kamali Webson of Bellingham, Brandeis University senior midfielder Theo Terris of Concord, Framingham State sophomore midfielder Ronaldo Vieira of Framingham, Babson senior midfielder Max Walker of Newton, and University of Massachusetts Boston sophomore forward Stefanos Galouzis of Watertown.
The North listing has Trinity College senior defender Joe Buckley of Shrewsbury and Tufts University freshman forward Gustavo Santos of Framingham.
